You Do Not Have To Be Good

Katie Kandarian A few weeks ago the country was inspired by a beautiful singing voice from an unlikely place. Susan Boyle, middleaged British “spinster” became a household name after the video of her singing on a popular British TV show, similar to American Idol. Why was the sound of her voice so surprising? Should all great singers have beautifully shaped brows and look like Carrie Underwood (an American Idol winner)? What does this mean for us, the ones who were surprised. In the words of poet Mary Oliver, “you do not have to be good” might we add, “or beautiful”.
