Summer of Love
Sunday Aug 27, 2017
Sunday Aug 27, 2017
Come relive memories from the Summer of Love 50 years ago. In this non-traditional church service, we'll intersperse both sung and recorded music from the era, including the musical Hair and the Mamas and Papas. Instead of a sermon, we'll have short presentations by people who came of age during that time, including Stuart Fink, who regretfully passed on going to Woodstock, and Kirk Smith. All are welcome!

Monday Aug 14, 2017
Ed Vaughan, PhD., Professor of Sociology Emeritus at University of Missouri-Columbia will use the book of Jonah to show how biblical materials are frequently misunderstood. He will show that the writer was being reflective about Israel’s behavior and will draw several parallels to our current social and cultural conflicts. Before the sermon, Worship Associate Bob Simoni will read a "story for all ages" that tells the story from another perspective, that of the whale that swallowed Jonah.

Theme, surrounding the Independence Day Holiday, is “patriotism.” It will explore the various meanings of the word in context with the holiday. Pulpit guest Bob Meyerson will focus on how the word has been defined throughout all of the wars in which we’ve been involved, with special emphasis on the Revolutionary war and the Civil war. Who were the patriots? Who were the traitors? And who defines them? Are the ‘winners’ always the patriots? Let’s take a closer look.

Flower Communion
Monday Jun 05, 2017
Monday Jun 05, 2017
This year marks the 95th Anniversary of the Flower Communion tradition. To commemorate this anniversary, the Prague Unitarian Church has invited UU congregations around the world to join in the celebration on Sunday, June 4. Join us and bring a flower to share!
The Flower Communion was first celebrated in Prague on June 4, 1923 by Norbert Čapek, who was also the founder of the Unitarian Church in Czechoslovakia. He saw the need to unite the diverse congregants of his church, from varying Protestant, Catholic, and Jewish backgrounds, through honoring the universal beauty of nature. His wife, Rev. Maja Čapek, brought the ritual to the United States in 1940.
